Instructions
It is critically important to order the appropriate “VC” Prep-Set medications for the individual patient. This will ensure optimal diagnostic efficacy and maximal patient safety. As part of this procedure, patients will be asked to take an oral colon-cleansing regimen that also includes two radiological contrast materials (stool tagging agents used to digitally subtract any solid or liquid stool in the colon). There are two prep sets available for the virtual colonoscopy exam, which includes the required medications and the radiology order; only one is to be prescribed to the patient. The medications in our “VC” Prep-Sets are available in CHCS and nine military pharmacies carry all the items in the Sets. (To view the prep-set instruction page, please click on “Prep Instructions” on your left). (To view list of pharmacies, please click on “Pharmacy Locations” on your left).

It is very important that the patient is thorough and strict with the bowel preparations, as this will optimize the accuracy of the exam. Provider should give a copy of the “Patient Instruction Sheet” to the patient at the time of the consultation. (Please use the “Printable Version”; this one-page instruction sheet is available under “Prep Instructions” on your left). After the consultation, the patient needs to call to schedule the appointment, the primary scheduling phone number is 202-782-6188 or 0892. After the exam, a password-protected report will be sent to the Referring Physician via Outlook email within 3-5 days. Patient will receive a copy of the same results within 2-3 weeks. (Click on “VC Protocol” to view flowchart). We are performing this screening examination in conjunction with the Gastroenterology Service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Patients with the recommendation for polypectomy can obtain an optical colonoscopy within 2 weeks. Patient must call Jennifer Chung, the Virtual Colonoscopy Coordinator, at 202-782-0892 to make arrangements.
